September 3, 2025 Update

Morning All,

Just a reminder that this Saturday is our Annual USS Grayling Memorial Ceremony. Time is 1100 and location is the southwest corner of Sloans Lake Park near Sheridan and 17th Ave. We are having a lunch afterwards at Post 17. Cost for an all you can eat taco buffet will be $20 per person. We will also have a donation jar to help with the cost of the complimentary meals (i.e. Rife Guard, bugler, etc.) and a tip jar for the Post. Please invite friends and family. Please come out to honor our shipmates who gave their all for their country

Now for the fun part, due to the Dragon Boat Races the parking lot at the memorial will be only open for the volunteers for that event. If you are in the ceremony or if you want to drop someone off just let the people at the entrance to the lot know that you are with us and they are required to let you thru. If you are part of the ceremony (i.e., honor guard, singer, bugler, wreath bearer, etc.) there is limited parking space in the maintenance area. Just let our guys know when you get to the back barriers by the building. There is ample parking across Sheridan and some in the neighborhood across 17th ave.

Hope to see you there.

Paul

Update From August 23rd Meeting

Morning All,

Yesterday's meeting was a pretty good one, with excellent speakers and 21 members with 27 total. For those who were unable to attend yesterdays meeting I have the following update:

  1. The speakers were from the Rocky Mountain Honor Flight Foundation. It was a very good talk about how they honor our veterans with a three day trip to DC to view all the veteran monuments with everything paid for. If you would like to do this there is a long sign up list so get your name in now and about a year or so later you should be chosen. We have two of our members going on the next flight -- Dale Bowman and Harry Nuce.
  2. The Honor Flight Foundation is doing a telethon on September 18th at channel 9. They are looking for volunteers to man the phones. It is located downtown and runs from 0500 to 1900. They have it sectioned into three hour time frames -- 0500 - 0900; 0900 - 1200; 1200 - 1500; 1500 - 1900. We had about seven people sign up with most doing the 1200 - 1500 time. If you are interested please contact Robert Hooker at r.hook19@yahoo.com This is a great opportunity for our organization to get noticed in the Denver metro area.
  3. The Honor Flight Foundation gets all theire money from donations and only donations. King Soopers/Kroger has a program that if you have one of their cards and sign up using the attached document very time you buy groceries a small portion will be sent to the Foundation. It does not come out of your pocket it comes from King Soopers. So if you use them please sign up.
  4. We are having a working party on Saturday the 30th to clean up the memorial. Time 1000 and location is at the Sloans Lake Park near the intersection of 17 Ave. and Sheridan. We are planning to go to lunch afterwards. We need battery/gas grass trimmers, brooms and trash bags. The memorial should be in good shape so it should not take too long.
  5. Our memorial Ceremony is on September 6th at 1100. Because of the Dragon Boat Races the same day the parking spaces at the memorial are saved for the races. There is parking in the neighborhoods across 17 ave and in the big shopping center across Sheridan. If you are unable to walk it or if you are in the ceremony there will be parking in the maintenance area pass the barriers near the building. Please get the word out to family and friends.
  6. Kaps 4 Kids event is September 9th (Tuesday) at Children's Hospital. Time is 1330 but be there at 1245 to check into security. If you want to attend your name has to be submitted to them by the day before. It looked like we had about 7 or 8 people signed up. To sign up please contact Jennifer Lavigne at 720-425-4927 or jlavigne1023@gmail.com
  7. Our 50th Anniversary plaque has been sent to the company to start construction. And we will be getting out the form to order your brick. Due to issues with the company we will go with only one color and font. The color will be a light beige because the engraving stands out better.
  8. We are signed up for the Louisville Parade for September 1st. Parade starts at 1000 and we will meet at the Louiseville middle school parking lot to stage the trailer and the go to the staging area. We are number 18 in the parade. More details to follow with maps and rules. We are also signed up for the Broomfield Parade on September 20th. More details to follow when we get them.
  9. If you have switched/joined to Post 17 and have not contacted Ray Savard. Please do so he can check to see if it went to the state American Legion. 303-815-6229 or rangesurveys@comcast.net
  10. If you have not gotten your challenge coin, please do so by contacting Tami. 303-995-5810 or tamara5810@gmail.com
  11. One final note, I have been asked and accepted the position of Western Region District Two Vice Commander. I will be a back up to Brian Bell.

This is about all the typing I can do. I hope to see you all at our upcoming events.

Thanks

Paul

Asbestos Alert!

Written by T. Michael Bircumshaw and is in the last publication of the American Submariner on pg. 29.  It is important enough to be read to the members as they may have missed it.  “If you served any time between years 1900 and 2000 and did any time at sea or at certain Military installations, then you have been exposed to Asbestos.  Please get at least a high definition, no contrast needed, cat scan of your lungs.  Do it with a civilian pulmonologist, not the VA, and ask them to specifically look for pleural plaques and interstitial scarring in your lungs.  Once you have finally done that, call me at 951-775-4549.  Call me to tell me the results and we are hoping that your lungs are clean.  But, if like me, you have pleural plaques or/and asbestosis, then I can offer you some guidance on what to do about it.  It cannot be cured, but it can be compensated for, call me.  Don’t make me repeat myself, because I will.  Please do this for you and your family.”

Here are the links of how to make a claim to VA on PACT Act issues.

The first one is off the VA website and it is the actual form to make a claim. It does require you to be registered with the VA health System. The second one is a link to a VFW website to ask for help on applying for a claim. They do step by step instructions. The phone number is the VA hot line to ask VA help in filing a claim. The last is a YouTube on all this information. He is an ex-marine with info on all the agent orange and toxic exposure acts. Good info.
